This year is my 20th year as a full-time college counselor. I spent 19 years college counseling in public high schools, and now work full-time as the owner of Yvonne Espinoza College Counseling Services. I have supported hundreds of students in planning for and applying to college. I also assist my students with filling out the FAFSA and comparing financial aid award letters.

Financial Aid: FAFSA
I have worked advising students and doing program management with College Possible for four years, and have advised over 300 students through the college and financial aid application process.
Financial aid: FAFSA, CSS Profile, Reviewing Award Letters - Have seen and worked with students through many scenarios, including divorced families, undocumented parents, etc. Experience interpreting and comparing award letters, successfully writing and completing financial aid appeals, communicating with aid offices about specific situations.
Finding fit: Building a Balanced College List, College Decision, College Transition - Have worked with hundreds of students on building a balanced college list that fits their needs, and ultimately choosing a college. Wrote an email series around the college transition process for a college access nonprofit. (Also see: https://sites.google.com/view/collegepoint-spotlight-schools/home)

I am an independent educational consultant with 9 years of admissions experience. I help many families navigate the financial aid process, from list building, to applying for aid, to understanding their award and beyond. I have worked with students from different countries with different citizen statuses, from undocumented to green cards holders and naturalized citizens. I am also queer and neurodivergent, and I love helping students with these specific access and fit needs.

Socioemotional Support
Study Abroad
Overall: I'm a 20-year veteran independent admissions counselor. Having worked extensively with non-professional volunteer cohorts (especially 826LA, Minds Matter), I have great empathy for how intense this process can be to the uninitiated. I'm delighted to provide support where I can.
1) Personal Statements. This is the core of what I do (I was a long-term college writing/language instructor before getting into counseling). So I'm open to questions around pretty much anything.
2) List Building. Again, something I've done with hundreds of students over the years, at a broad range of academic strength levels.
3) College Decision. See #s 1 and 2 above. This is often an incredibly part of the game.
4) Socioemotional Support. I've always maintained a strong dialogue with my classroom students and counseling clients. It's not at all uncommon for teenagers to have questions and confusions which they're not comfortable bringing to parents and/or school authority figures, and I see it as a central part of my role to listen and provide careful feedback. That said.... of course, part of the magic here is knowing where the proper boundaries are, and when to refer a student to someone more appropriate.
5) Study Abroad. Because I remain in contact with many former students, and also do extensive graduate admissions counseling, I've spent a lot of time helping guide young people toward summer, semester, and year abroad programs. I've also helped many high school students who came on with me earlier in the process to find enriching summer possibilities.
6) STEM students. While I'm not myself from the STEM world (English/French major and writer), I've had SO many kids who were heading in that direction. So I've had to learn a fair amount of the lay of the land for college admissions. Of course, I won't know EVERYTHING here the way, say, an actual engineering grad will. But I'm a good place to start for general info.
7) First-Gen Students. I'm not first-gen myself, and didn't grow up in an underserved community. My awareness here is a byproduct of many years of hands-on volunteering in the nonprofit sector. So I'm happy to share my experiences as a compassionate outsider trying my best to help. >> People are certainly welcome to take a look at my website if they want more of a snapshot of me before reaching out: www.counsel-ink.com

Supporting International Students
Supporting STEM Students
Balanced College List Building - I completed the Independent Education Consultant Certificate in June 2021 and have been advising students as part of my private business for since 1998. I always strive to make sure the list is balanced in terms of admissions and also financial fit.
Personal Statement Best Practices - I have been advising students on college essays for over 10 years and understand what colleges are looking for and helping students find their voice while avoiding overediting.
Supporting International Students - I took electives in assisting students applying to international universities and also helping international students apply to the US. Being educated in the UK myself, I am well used to explaining the American college application process to those unfamiliar with it, and I work with many international families based both in the US and abroad.
Supporting STEM Students - Many of my students are budding engineers, scientists, or interested in health fields. I currently advise students from 9th grade and up, helping them explore their subjects of interests and apply to colleges that will best support their goals. My own son is currently taking a Master's in Artificial Intelligence at Georgia Tech and he went to a local STEM magnet high school. We lived and breathed STEM!
Personal Statement Best Practices
Supporting First-Gen Students
Personal Statement- I feel confident with writing personal statements for scholarships and college applications. I applied to 7 colleges and was only rejected from one, as I feel my writing abilities are strong. Being first-gen, I was apart of many college-access program through my high school that I asked for advice regarding personal statements. The programs and counselors that I had access to provided me with great resources that have made me into a confident writer. I have also received three scholarships during my final year of high school: Doña Cardenas Scholarship, Doc and Jean Chaffee Scholarship, and the Bay East Foundation Scholarship. I hope to share any advice and tips to other coaches to successfully provide feedback to their mentees!
Supporting First-Gen Students: I currently lead a pre-veterinary program for first-gen students of color where we provide mentorship, career resources, and an insight into the field of vet med.

Supporting LGBTQ+
Balanced College List--My number 1 priority for students. Counselor since 2015.
College Decision/ Reviewing award letters: Focus on making the award letter clear so family can understand financial costs. Making a choice among colleges starts with affordability, extends to a good social, academic, and personal fit.
Support LQBTQ+: I have worked with students with different identities and have family members who are LQBTQ+ so I understand a little bit about what issues they face.

Specific Geographic Region(s)
Hi! I'm Hannah. I just graduated in May 2022 from Johns Hopkins University with majors in biomedical engineering and Spanish. While at JHU, I individually mentored 6 students through Matriculate (the college version of ScholarMatch), which has given me experience in many of these fields with different students! I don't know the answers to everything of course, but I'll try to help as much as I can with what I do know.
Balanced College List Building: I've mentored 6 students through this! I'm particularly familiar with engineering schools but happy to help as much as I can with other fields of study also. Generally, a couple of in-state public schools can be matches/safties. I am familiar with a few safety schools that are private and provide good aid to any US students
CSS Profile: I filled this form out myself for 4 years recently (2018-2021), so I know how tedious it can be, and I'm familiar with IDOC. I also mentored 5 students through this. Every student is different. Some are able to fill it out rather quickly, others have disorganized parents who don't know where their tax returns are, and others have special situations such as not being in contact with a parent or having undocumented parents. I've helped students through all of these situations.
FAFSA: ditto for the description for CSS profile basically, though the FAFSA is generally simpler.
Supporting STEM students: I'm a recent bioengineering grad, which means I'm pretty familiar with biology, engineering, and bioengineering in particular. I'd be happy to help with other fields as much as I can.
Specific Geographic Regions: I know the UC and CSU systems somewhat well! (California)
Personal Statement best practices: again, I've mentored 6 students through this. It's definitely an art and less of a science, but there are definitely some things that you want to avoid.
Receiving award letters: walked through this for 6 students so that they would understand how much their bill would be for different schools, how work-study and loans could be applied if desired.
Neurodivergent students: I am neurotypical, but my brother has autism, so I have a decent amount of familiarity with this and how to get accommodations.
