Career Coach
Volunteer online as a career coach and help our students design a brighter future!
Description
Searching for internships and jobs is not an easy task. As a virtual career coach, you have the opportunity to teach our students career-building skills to become competitive candidates and confident professionals. There are two ways to support our students: Join the Career Community to be available for one-off questions or match with a student during their academic year for one-on-one support (7-month service). Continue to learn more!
Qualifications
To participate, career coaches must:
- Have a bachelor’s degree
- Have 3+ years of professional experience
- Commit to one meeting per month
- Complete our online training
- Pass a background check
- Due to policy and out of safety for our students, a social security number or similar government identification is required by our background check service
ScholarMatch selects volunteers based on program capacity and discretion. Volunteer candidates are not guaranteed a spot in the program.
Join our Career Community
Fuel the social capital of our students and join our Career Community by adding your profile to our database. Volunteers will support multiple students with one-off questions about their career path through informational interviews or provide industry-specific advice on resumes, interview prep, etc. This program is flexible – career coaches can opt-in or-out at anytime after completing their training, and career coaches and students decide their focus area/goals for each interaction! This is a great opportunity for busy professionals who have a wealth of industry knowledge and want to make an impact on first-generation college students’ career journeys.
Match with a Student
The “Career Launch” program is designed to bring career coaches who wish to deepen their relationship with first-generation college students and teach them valuable career skills during a 7-month term. Once volunteers complete their training, they will be matched with a student to begin providing individualized career support. Career coaches and students will virtually connect twice a month for an hour, working through a curriculum that is designed to prepare them for career planning and management. This is a great opportunity for industry professionals to practice their coaching and leadership skills, while inspiring first-generation college students to pursue their dreams.

Training
We provide robust training for volunteers through several online training modules, which we estimate take 2-3 hours to complete. We will introduce you to ScholarMatch, the student population, advising strategies and resources. You may work at your own pace, but we recommend completing the modules within two weeks.
