It’s an exciting time for all our college-bound high school seniors: They’re making the decision on where they’re going to attend college. Two students’ stories we’re especially proud to share are those of Kim and Gloria “Jack” Mejia-Cuellar, twin sisters who are heading to Yale University on a full ride! They grew up in Oakland, and were involved in the programs at 826 Valencia. The Oakland Tribune wrote up an excellent piece about them. We hope you are moved by their story. By registering as a donor, you’ll be able to read the personal statements of all our amazing students. (Image courtesy Oakland Tribune)

Teaming up to offer scholarship workshops
Last week, we teamed up with the Mission Economic Development Agency to offer a workshop on finding and applying for scholarships. We discussed some important tips – ideas like apply early and set up a calendar – and worked with students on crafting their scholarship personal statements. About 20 students attended, and they all applied for a scholarship on the spot. In doing so, they were automatically entered to win an additional scholarship from MEDA. Thanks to MEDA for the opportunity and to Caminos for letting us share their computer lab to host the workshop. If you’re interested in learning more about our financial aid programs, click here or contact us.

ScholarMatch on the 'Beat of the Bay' Today
"Beat of the Bay," KFOG’s public interest radio program directed by radio personality Peter Finch, featured ScholarMatch this morning! The morning piece featured an interview with ScholarMatch students, Pedro Perez and Dorrian Lewis, and ScholarMatch staff, Miel Alegre and Vickie Vertiz.
Pedro, a first-generation college student, discussed his desire to complete a BA in criminal justice at Sonoma State University, after taking a year off from school because he could not pay his tuition bill. Pedro needs about $3,000 to make his college degree possible. To help Pedro, click here here.
Dorrian cited her success at City College of San Francisco due to the full funding that ScholarMatch donors provided, and how she first learned about ScholarMatch by participating in the Best American Non-Required Reading workshop with Dave Eggers. Our team members, Miel Alegre, ScholarMatch Executive Director, and Vickie Vertiz, Program Director for College Success, talked about how ScholarMatch began, about our innovative website, and our college access workshops.
Peter also featured a clip from an interview with Nínive Calegari and Dave Eggers about their ideas on how to keep good teachers in public schools, with regards to their book, Teachers Have It Easy.
For our San Francisco friends, the podcast will air between 5:30- 6AM tomorrow, Saturday, June 18, 2011, on KFOG (104.5 FM), and KNBR (680 AM), and 5-5:30AM on The Bone (107.7 FM).
Thank you to Peter and KFOG for shedding light on our amazing students. We’re all Fogheads here at ScholarMatch!
