Elizabeth Gilbert talks ScholarMatch on ‘Good Morning America’

ScholarMatch supporter and best-selling author Elizabeth Gilbert shared the story of her latest work, the revival cookbook At Home on the Range, on ABC’s Good Morning America today! Gilbert said how her great-grandmother would be proud that a collection of her recipes would benefit ScholarMatch. “Sixty-five years after she’s passed, she’s putting a bunch of kids through college,” Gilbert said.

Listen to ScholarMatch on Fog Files!

The interview of Friday, June 17, where ScholarMatch staff and students spoke with Peter Finch of "Fog Files," KFOG’s public interest radio program, is now available for listening!

"Fog Files" airs on KFOG weekdays from 5:00-10:00am, during which the ScholarMatch feature will air six times starting June 26. For those not in San Francisco, you can listen to the interview now, or find it on Finch’s webpage. Students Pedro Perez and Dorrian Lewis, and staff Miel Alegre and Vickie Vertiz, spoke with Finch about the history of ScholarMatch and the success it’s achieved. While Dorrian’s college expenses have been fully met through ScholarMatch, Pedro still needs about $3,000 to make his college dreams possible. Thank you to Peter and KFOG for giving the spotlight to some of our amazing students. We’re all Fogheads here at ScholarMatch!

ScholarMatch in San Francisco Magazine

We’re excited to be included in the May 2011 issue of San Francisco magazine as part of a Q&A interview with our founder Dave Eggers! In it, Dave talks about issues facing the education system, and how programs like 826 and ScholarMatch hope to make an impact.

The article does a great job of highlighting the obstacles students face in regards to attending college. It explains how ScholarMatch hopes to contribute, in the same way that our 826 network does, to bridging these gaps to ensure our students’ success.

Thanks to San Francisco magazine and Douglas McGray for the wonderful write-up! As the article puts it, “ScholarMatch makes it easy to send a kid to college.” To learn just how easy it is, click here for more information on donating, or here to meet our talented scholars.

ScholarMatch, as seen on …

We’re humbled by all the recent pieces about ScholarMatch. The San Francisco Chronicle‘s In The Mission blog picked up MissionLocal’s story on us. We were featured in Daily Candy and also on TrendCentral and Crowdsourcing.org. It’s great to see all the positive reception to what we do.

Coverage like this does more than just make us feel good: It enables more people to learn about the talented students in their community and creates more awareness of ScholarMatch. And those things lead to more support. We couldn’t provide any student resources — be those tuition funds from donors or our free workshops — without the generosity of people like you! ScholarMatch Gets Mission Local-ized!

Mission Local, a neighborhood blog, just ran an informative and spirited piece about ScholarMatch! The entire article can be found in its entirety here. Our very own ScholarMatch student, Dorrian Lewis, was interviewed and had some very inspirational thoughts on her unique college experience.

ScholarMatch would to thank Mission Local and writer Caroline Bins for their interest in our program and the kind article. And as always, we are thrilled and grateful to be located on Valencia Street in San Francisco’s vibrant Mission District.

Our 826 Family on NBC

Here’s some great news: Students at 826 Valencia – many of whom could become ScholarMatch students in just a few years – were featured on a recent episode of NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams! The piece showcased how 826 fosters a playful atmosphere and provides one-on-one attention, both of which help students get more involved in the learning process.

The work ethic and creative spirit that caught NBC’s eye will no doubt help 826 students succeed as they follow the path to secondary education and beyond. We at ScholarMatch are excited for our friends at 826 and even more excited to serve those students in the future!
